  • A Jewish Response

For Jews, the environmental crisis is a religious challenge. As heirs to a tradition of stewardship that goes back to Genesis and that teaches us to be partners in the ongoing work of Creation, we cannot accept the escalating destruction of our environment and its effect on human health and livelihood. Where we are despoiling our air, land, and water, it is our sacred duty as Jews to acknowledge our God-given responsibility and take action to alleviate environmental degradation and the pain and suffering that it causes. We must reaffirm and bequeath the tradition we have inherited which calls upon us to safeguard humanity's home. (From A Jewish Response to the Environmental Crisis. )

History

In the spring of 1992 at the invitation of Al Gore and Carl Sagan, the leadership of the major organizations in American Jewish life, eminent rabbis, denominational presidents, and Jewish U.S. senators gathered in Washington, D.C. to discuss the creation of a Jewish response to the mounting environmental crisis. Those present agreed that the Jewish community had a responsibility to address the crisis.

In 1993, the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life was created and charged with catalyzing a distinctively Jewish programmatic and policy response to the environmental crisis. COEJL was initially envisioned as a time-limited project to “jump start” environmental programs that would become permanently integrated into Jewish institutions.

Established by the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (then NJCRAC), the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, COEJL became part of the National Religious Partnership for the Environment to enact a distinctively Jewish programmatic and policy response to the environmental crisis.

The Founding Statement of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life

Issued by the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life
Washington, D.C. March 10, 1992

We, American Jews of every denomination, from diverse organizations and differing political perspectives, are united in deep concern that the quality of human life and the earth we inhabit are in danger, afflicted by rapidly increasing ecological threats. Among the most pressing of these threats are: depletion of the ozone layer, global warming, massive deforestation, the extinction of species and loss of biodiversity, poisonous deposits of toxic chemicals and nuclear wastes, and exponential population growth. We here affirm our responsibility to address this planetary crisis in our personal and communal lives.

We must reaffirm and bequeath the tradition we have inherited which calls upon us to safeguard humanity’s home.

We have convened this unprecedented consultation in Washington, D.C. to inaugurate a unified Jewish response to the environmental crisis. We pledge to carry to our homes, communities, congregations, and workplaces the urgent message that air, land, water and living creatures are endangered. We will draw our people’s attention to the timeless texts that speak to us of God’s gifts and expectations. This consultation represents a major step towards:

  • mobilizing our community towards energy efficiency, the reduction and recycling of wastes, and other practices which promote environmental sustainability;
  • initiating environmental education programs in settings where Jews gather
  • to learn, particularly among young people;
  • pressing for appropriate environmental legislation at every level of government and in international forums;
  • convening business and labor leaders to explore specific opportunities for exercising environmental leadership;
  • working closely in these endeavors with scientists, educators, representatives of environmental groups, Israelis, and leaders from other religious communities.

Our agenda is already overflowing. Israel’s safety, the resettlement of Soviet Jewry, anti-Semitism, the welfare of our people in many nations, the continuing problems of poverty, unemployment, hunger, health care and education, as well as assimilation and intermarriage — all these and more have engaged us and must engage us still.

But the ecological crisis hovers over all Jewish concerns, for the threat is global, advancing, and ultimately jeopardizes ecological balance and the quality of life. It is imperative, then, that environmental issues also become an immediate, ongoing and pressing concern for our community.

      my mother was a long time educator of the deaf in my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana USA and, of course, most of my values and life mission comes from her, at least she gets "credit" for the good things. And, if you do not know $18 is a v

      The Chai symbol is often worn by Jews as a medallion around the neck (along with the Star of David (Magen David), and the Hamsa).
      In Hebrew, the related word chaya means "living thing" or "animal", and is derived from the Hebrew word chai (חי), meaning "life".
      Jews often give gifts and donations in multiples of 18, which is called "giving chai"

It is said that at all times there are 36 special people in the world, and that were it not for them, all of them, if even one of them was missing, the world would come to an end. The two Hebrew letters for 36 are the lamed, which is 30, and the vav, which is 6. Therefore, these 36 are referred to as the Lamed-Vav Tzadikim. UPS Foundation Grants $58,000 to Child Welfare and Environmental Organizations

Tokyo, November 21, 2011

The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS (NYSE: UPS), has donated $43,823 to a foster group home, Kodomo no Sato, and $14,290 to the bamboo conservation group Nihon no Take Fan Club.

Kodomo no Sato began its child welfare activities as a daycare center in Osaka in 1977. It was certified for the Subsidized Project to Provide Daycare Facilities for Children in 1996 and as an Osaka City family shelter in 2001. Since its establishment, Kodomo no Sato has provided 24/7 support for families in adverse circumstances. The facility now provides live-in accommodations at the Kodomo no Sato Family Home. The grant will be used for children’s self-care projects, support for homeless people, winter night patrols, and outdoor activities such as camping.

Nihon no Take Fan Club was established in 1999 to conserve bamboo forests nationwide and to educate local communities on how to effectively utilize bamboo. Through various volunteer activities, the organization has helped to energize local communities and encourage interchange between cities and the countryside. The grant will be used to hold bamboo lantern festivals, which are one of the ways the club is using to strengthen and maintain the relationship between nature and the local community.

In addition to the donations, UPS has also supported both organizations with volunteer activities - Kodomo no Sato since 2006 and Nihon no Take Fan Club since 2008. More than 1,300 volunteer hours have been donated to both groups since.

Masato Umeno, president of UPS Japan, said, "UPS has long been involved with both Kodomo no Sato and Nihon no Take Fan Club as volunteers. Now we are greatly honored to be able to contribute again through these grants. UPS will continue to support the community in various means."

UPS No. 1 Shipper on 'Climate Counts' Scorecard for Third Year in a Row

Atlanta, December 07, 2011

For the third year in a row, UPS (NYSE: UPS) has earned the top score in the consumer shipping sector on the annual "Climate Counts" scorecard. UPS also shared the 11th highest score across all industries alongside Sony, Nokia and AB Electrolux among 136 ranked companies.

UPS ranked No. 1 in the consumer shipping sector with a score of 80, remaining ahead of competitors Deutsche Post World Net/DHL, the U.S. Postal Service and FedEx, which ranked second, third and fourth, respectively.

Climate Counts, an organization that works to bring consumers and companies together in the fight against global climate change, ranks the world's largest companies based on 22 criteria that focus on measuring and reducing climate impact, corporate support of public policy initiatives on climate change and openness and transparency in reporting.

Climate Counts issues a shopping guide to help consumers "support companies that take climate change seriously and avoid those that don't," according to the non-profit organization.

"This recognition is significant because Climate Counts rigorously evaluates performance rather than corporate marketing claims," said Scott Wicker, UPS's chief sustainability officer. "The Climate Counts shopping guide provides consumers with a signpost for companies that are truly committed to environmentally-responsible business practices."

The Climate Counts ranking is just the latest in a long list of honors for environmental leadership awarded to UPS. Other recent honors include: Highest score in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (tied with 3 others); No. 1 in the Carbon Disclosure Project S&P 500 and tied with 3 others in the Global 500; Interbrand Top 50 Best Global Green Brands, and Fortune's Most Admired Companies list.

"UPS's repeated and consistent top ranking in the shipping segment highlights our efforts to measure, manage and reduce our carbon footprint while offering consumers more choices that support their commitment to the environment," Wicker added.

The Climate Counts scorecard can be found at www.climatecounts.org. More information about UPS's sustainability initiatives is available at ups.com/responsibility.

Beijing, December 19, 2011

2011 UPS China "Global Volunteer Month" a great success

UPS (NYSE: UPS) made low-carbon and adopting a green lifestyle the theme of its 2011 "UPS Global Volunteer Month", during which 1,649 UPS employees and their family members participated in 57 volunteer activities and contributed 4,457 volunteer hours to serve the communities in which they live and work.

UPS employees in China organized and participated in a wide range of volunteer activities, which included: teaching students about international trade; holding parties for the elderly living in welfare housing and for mentally disabled students at vocational and technical schools; taking part in environmental research; removing litter and promoting the importance of ecological balance.

This year, The UPS Foundation has donated US$70,000 to the Green Travel Fund (under CANGO – the China Association for NGO Cooperation) to help Guangyuan, Sichuan Province, with its goal of advocating low-carbon environmentalism and supporting China’s public welfare cause by becoming the first city to exclusively use energy-saving lights. UPS also held a series of activities in conjunction with the CANGO Green Travel Fund. Under the theme "Low-carbon Citizen Volunteers in Action", activities such as "Test Drive and Ride of New Energy Automobiles" and "Forecast for the Shenzhen’s Year of Green Travel", were aimed at publicizing the ideas and lifestyle of low-carbon environmentalism and green travel.

Since it was founded in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. UPS has established Community Involvement Committees in every country within their business network to support programs that provide long-term solutions to community needs.

UPS Partners with Feed the Children to Deliver Community Support in Cebu

Cebu, December 19, 2011

UPS Philippines employees in Cebu rolled-up their brown sleeves to continue delivering more than logistics know-how during the company's 9th annual Global Volunteer Month. Eighty UPS employees and their families delivered nearly 400 volunteer hours during a two-day tree-planting activity in Barangay Toong, Cebu City, last October 22 and 23, 2011.

The environmental effort was jointly conducted with local non-government organization Feed the Children, as well as with representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Guadalupe Elementary School.

Expected to provide a variety of benefits to the local community, including improved air and water quality, some 500 tugas, narra, and talimboy seedlings were planted in an area measuring 700 square meters.

"UPS's assistance to Feed the Children stems from its commitment toward continued social investment and the promotion of sustainable development," said Tim Gohoc, managing director of UPS Philippines. "Providing resources for our children is only one step in protecting their welfare and fostering hope. It is through our partnerships that we continue to work toward creating profound and long-term impact in communities."

In Cebu, the tree-planting activity is part of a larger partnership of UPS with Feed the Children, which aims to respond to the various needs of underprivileged Filipino children. Feed the Children is also the recipient of a US$ 22,000 sponsorship grant from The UPS Foundation, with the local organization using the endowment to promote financial literacy and provide education for out-of-school youth, particularly in dressmaking and computer literacy.

UPS's Global Volunteer Month is only one of the many examples of the company's long-standing commitment to volunteerism. Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a responsible corporate citizen. Whether through involvement with The UPS Foundation, United Way, or volunteerism, UPS provides support to programs that address social and community issues, including economic and global literacy, environmental sustainability, nonprofit effectiveness, diversity and community safety.
